The 7-day withdrawal period is the optimistic rollup challenge window — a core security feature, not a limitation. When you withdraw from Base, the state root is posted to Ethereum. During the 7-day window, any observer (called a "challenger") can submit a fraud proof if they detect an invalid state transition. This mechanism means that even if Base's sequencer tries to steal funds, the fraud proof system catches it. After 7 days with no valid challenge, the withdrawal is finalized and you claim your ETH on Ethereum.

Third-party liquidity bridges offer fast withdrawals from Base by fronting the liquidity. Services like Across Protocol, Stargate Finance, Synapse, and Hop Protocol can move assets from Base to Ethereum in minutes by using their own liquidity pools — they collect a small fee and then wait the 7 days themselves to reclaim the funds. For amounts where paying a 0.05%–0.3% bridge fee is acceptable, these are good options. For large amounts where security is paramount, the canonical Base Bridge 7-day withdrawal is preferable.

Base Bridge supports ETH, USDC, USDT, WBTC, DAI, cbETH, LINK, UNI, AAVE, CRV, SNX, MKR, LDO, RPL, rETH, and 15+ additional ERC-20 tokens. Any ERC-20 token that has been explicitly supported by the OP Stack bridge can be deposited to Base. Note: USDC on Base comes in two forms — "Bridged USDC" (from the bridge) and "Native USDC" (issued by Circle directly on Base). Native USDC is preferred for DeFi on Base.

The canonical Base Bridge charges zero protocol fee. You only pay Ethereum gas for the deposit transaction (typically $3–20 depending on Ethereum network congestion) and a small Base gas fee for activity after bridging (typically under $0.01). There are no bridge fees, withdrawal fees, or hidden costs. Third-party fast bridges charge 0.05%–0.3% for fast withdrawal service, but the canonical Base Bridge at basebridge.pro does not.

An optimistic rollup is an Ethereum L2 scaling solution that processes transactions off-chain and posts compressed transaction data to Ethereum. It's "optimistic" because it assumes all transactions are valid by default — fraud proofs can be submitted within a challenge window (7 days for Base) to dispute invalid state transitions. This design allows much higher throughput and lower fees than Ethereum L1 while inheriting Ethereum's security guarantee. Alternative: ZK rollups use cryptographic proofs instead of fraud proofs, enabling faster withdrawals but are more complex to build.

No. Base does not have a native token. ETH is the gas token on Base — the same ETH you bridge from Ethereum. This is a deliberate design choice by Coinbase. There is no BASE token for gas or governance. Gas fees on Base are paid in ETH and are significantly cheaper than Ethereum mainnet (typically 100–1000x cheaper). Always be cautious of any project claiming to be "the official Base token" — no such token exists.

The Superchain is Optimism's vision for a network of OP Stack chains that share security, bridging infrastructure, and communication channels. Base is a key member of the Superchain alongside Optimism, Zora Network, Mode, Fraxtal, and others. Superchain chains can eventually communicate with each other more efficiently than through Ethereum L1. This means Base users will be able to bridge assets between Base and other Superchain members with lower latency and cost than bridging through Ethereum mainnet.

Base currently uses a centralized sequencer operated by Coinbase — a common design for early-stage OP Stack chains. The sequencer orders transactions and can theoretically censor individual transactions, but cannot steal funds because state validity is enforced by Ethereum L1. If the sequencer censors you, you can always "force include" a transaction directly via Ethereum L1. Coinbase has committed to progressively decentralizing Base's sequencer over time as part of the OP Stack Superchain roadmap.

To deposit to Base, you need ETH on Ethereum mainnet to pay Ethereum gas (typically $3–20 depending on congestion). You do not need Base ETH beforehand — your bridged ETH will be on Base when it arrives. After your first deposit, you'll have ETH on Base to pay Base gas fees (typically $0.001–0.01 per transaction). If you run out of Base ETH for gas and need to top up, use a CEX like Coinbase to send ETH directly to Base, or bridge a small additional amount of ETH via Base Bridge.

There are two forms of USDC on Base: Native USDC is issued directly by Circle on Base (contract address verified by Circle). Bridged USDC (also called USDbC) is the original Ethereum USDC wrapped via the OP Stack bridge. Native USDC is now the preferred form on Base — it has better liquidity in DeFi protocols and is directly redeemable with Circle. When you bridge USDC from Ethereum via Base Bridge, you receive bridged USDC. If you want native USDC on Base, you can swap bridged USDC for native USDC on Aerodrome or Uniswap V3 on Base.
